In various people, this disorder is common, and many of us do not know about it. If the treatment is not done on time, then it might cause damage. So, before we proceed further let us see what kind of disorder it is.
What is a steep corneal meridian?
Steep corneal meridian is the most common type of disorder seen in a patient. In this disease, the eye of a person emerges in the outward direction that forms around the cone. The scientific name of this disease is keratoconus. This is commonly seen among teenagers.
What is a flat corneal meridian?
Flat corneal meridian is a type of eye disease in which the tissues of the eye get flattened. In short, the shape of the cornea gets flat and the radius of curvature becomes large than the normal size. It may affect the eyesight. The scientific name is Cornea Plana.
What are the causes of this steep and flat corneal meridian?
Many researchers work on the causes, but they did not get the exact answer. From theories and facts, some postulates were gathered that reflect the causes of the steep corneal meridian and also on the flat corneal meridian. Many researchers think that in some people this disease may come by birth. But few conditions are as follows:
The first fact that is seen in the patient of the steep corneal meridian and flat corneal meridian is their family history. If your family member is suffering from it, then there are 50 percent chances that you might also suffer. So, do regular check-ups. Furthermore, if you are suffering it, then you might take your child at the age of 10 o the doctor and keep regular check-ups.
The other factor is age. Steep corneal meridian is commonly found in younger people. But the observation might be wrong. It can happen at any age including the ’30s and ’40s too. Flat corneal meridian is commonly found in older people.
The cause of steep corneal meridian is due to other diseases like asthma, and other allergies that can weaken your tissues. Hence, the flat corneal meridian is also found in people who have weak systematic conditions.
However, steep corneal meridian and flat corneal meridian are caused due to weak tissues. If your eye tissues are not strong enough then they cannot maintain the shape of the cornea and it can lose the shape.
Rubbing of eyes:
Another cause includes rubbing of your eyes. It is obvious if you rub your eye frequently, then the tissues of the eye get weak and weak with time. This gives progress to the steep corneal meridian. Moreover, the flat corneal meridian is also caused by this.
Can you lose your sight?
Steep corneal meridian if not treated in the start, then you can lose your sight. Hence, with the flat corneal meridian, your eyesight is weak. You have to use a contact lens or glasses to see things. Even you can transplant cornea if it is in bad states. Many surgeons suggest LASIK, the treatment of flat corneal meridian and steep corneal meridian. But it is not the solution. The condition of the cornea becomes worse. So, do not ever get LASIK surgery.
What are the symptoms?
As mentioned earlier in steep corneal meridian the shape of your cornea becomes like a ball or cone and in flat corneal meridian, it is flattened. Hence, in both situations your vision is weak, and things you see are a blur.
How it is treated?
The best option is to use eyesight glasses that will increase your vision, and in some cases, a contact lens is suggested. A treatment named cornea collagen crosslinking is beneficial that will increase your vision and improve the strength of your eye tissues.
